Giving back to our Community

The Explorers and The Pioneers were so excited to deliver our Baskets to our local heroes. They did a great job creating for the baskets and really grasped the concept of giving back. They should be really proud of themselves as Muireann and I are really proud of them all - Milly

Collaboration in Skippers

We are challenging ourselves in art today. We are creating our own busy street scene by using pva, scissors and magazines. We like Eric Carle's style and are using it to cut out trees, buildings, trains and cars. Come in and see our art in progress.

Helping Hands

In Skippers during Concept we are discussing how we use our hands to help our community.
We did some hand print painting last week.
Now we're collaborating in our groups to talk about how we help each other.
Some people are the writers. Some people are the speakers.

These Are The People In Our Neighbourhood

We celebrated our concept learning today. We have been learning about the different people in our community and how they help us.
Skippers stepped into the kitchen and made fruit kebabs. We know that chefs are people in our community who make food for others and bring them joy.
We also filmed our scenes for our concept movies. Thank you to the parents and kids for the efforts with dress ups, you all looked fabulous! We felt so safe at school today because we had so many firefighters and policemen/policewomen to look after us.

Busy Medical Staff

Watch our busy beehive of a hospital at Town Time.
Can you ask us at home: How do nurses help us? How do doctors help us?

Recovering and Reading in Pounamu Hospital

We are reading about the body.

A Visit From Ross (Skippers)

For our concept learning, Georgia's Dad Ross came to visit us and show us all the fun he has managing Coronet Peak.
We watched a funny video of all the people who work there.
There are 450,000 people who visit the ski fields each year. So he told us about the rubbish and recycling.
2000 people go up th chairlift per hour.
The Green Gates chairlift has a span of 40m high.
Thank you for all the learning Ross.

Fergus' Writing

How Does Our Community Help Us?
by Fergus McMurdo

I think the airforce helps us by keeping us safe at war and by helping us when we are hurt.

Firefighters help us by putting out fires. Also they help us out of buildings. I think teachers are good because they help children.

Pounamu General Hospital

Move over Shortland Street, there's a new hospital in Pounamu Town. Our doctors and nurses are working around the clock to care for our patients.
Dr Neo: "Tianyou broke her leg and I'm giving her an injection".
Dr Mackenzie: "They fell off a cliff and they broke their leg. I had to look in their ears and their mouth. I had to put a bandage on them. They had to lie down. I had to check the heart. It was broken. I had to look inside their tummy."

Flight to Rio

We turned Skippers into an airport today. We had a check in counter, passports, boarding passes, security, stewards and even a plane! We also had a big queue. It was so much fun role playing.

Reece and Siena our captains.

You can't go anywhere without it....

Queueing up to check in.

Getting bags checked by security.

Ben applying for his new NZ passport.

Sokhra checking in and Cate and Neo issuing boarding passes and stamping passports.

Londyn checking Aria at security.

Aria giving her boarding pass to Jett.

Boarding our Boeing 747.

Mrs V directing the plane onto the runway.

Lucky passengers in first class, Otis and Sophie.

TAKE OFF! See you in Rio......

Jemma's Visit

We had a visit from Ana and Aria's mum Jemma. She works at the airport. She taught us about all the different things she does in her job. We enjoyed your visit Jemma, thank you for coming.

Puppets and Parfaits

We, the Explorers and Discoverers, shared our learning about mechanisms. We created puppets using a simple mechanism.  We performed a song from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, "Doll On A Music Box/Truly Scrumptious".

The puppet making process was very challenging. A lot of us had to start from scratch more than once as our puppets weren't big enough.

Thank you for coming to see our learning journey.

Exploring Levers and Pulleys

Do you know what a lever is?

What about a pulley?

We explored these simple machines today. We were given a buddy and equipment and then had to switch on our brains.

Have a look at our learning today.

Concept time in Pounamu

Is it Spring time? BOING!

This morning we were exploring springs.
We talked about stretching and squeezing and bending. We looked at a simple writing pen and observed the spring inside it.

Have you got a slinky at home? Get us to show you the three different things you do with springs.
