Tuakana/teina buddies

We met our buddy for writing time today.
Our buddy is going to help us learn and encourage us.
The older or more experienced buddy is the tuakana.
The younger is the teina.

Questioning at reading time.

We are learning to ask questions before reading. It helps us understand what we read.

Exploring Shapes at Concept Time

We used different shapes for the fulcrum when we were making levers. We used cylinders, cubes and cuboids. We also measured how far our pom poms went when we pushed the lever.

Exploring Levers and Pulleys

Do you know what a lever is?

What about a pulley?

We explored these simple machines today. We were given a buddy and equipment and then had to switch on our brains.

Have a look at our learning today.

Oral Language Learning

We had some really interesting news in the Discoverers today.

James spent a long time using his growth mindset building Lego.

Otis bought in some lights from a shop near the new Countdown.

Charlotte bought some stones in from a special shop.

Simple Machines: Screws

We did some thinking about what screws are used for.

Niamh - something that you can build with
Ataahua - screws help you with jobs
Bastian - helps you stick wood together
Aria - they help you to make things
Te Arani - helps you put the nails in the wood
Ara - stick wood together
Emersyn - stick the floor together

They are a simple machine because they help people. We had fun exploring how they work and classifying them according to size and shape.

We looked closely at screws to identify their parts. We looked at the threads, which are inclined planes. Look at our first and second attempts at drawing them. #GrowthMindset

Olive was able to use the screw driver with ease! She was first to get the screw all the way into the sponge!

Concept time in Pounamu

Is it Spring time? BOING!

This morning we were exploring springs.
We talked about stretching and squeezing and bending. We looked at a simple writing pen and observed the spring inside it.
